SAIL out of lockdown

Appreciative Inquiry Exercise - Deadline 19th April 2021

Surrey Youth Focus are spearheading a new way of working with families and young people that many of you will appreciate. Known as “Appreciative Inquiry”, this is a holistic approach to gathering lived experience that understands the complexity of life, and that simply looking at one aspect of a child’s life is not only insufficient, but can lead to the wrong intervention.

Family Voice Surrey are keen to support this initiative. The first exercise seeks to understand how children in Surrey are experiencing the end of lockdown, and practitioners across education, health, care and the 3rd sector have been asked to interview one child.

We want to ensure that children with SEND are included and we feel that parents are key to this.

What next?

Is your child aged 10-21?

Are you both happy to have an informal conversation?

Read the instructions, then sign the consent form and follow the “record the story” form.

How?

Be flexible. If you have a second adult who can keep notes, great! If not, or if your child is uncomfortable, do what works for you. They might want to help you write the answer, or add a picture. You might want to record the conversation or even video it.

A partial story is better than no story, so don’t worry if you only get some of it covered!
