Please find below all the online events and chats we are holding over the next couple of months.

If you want to share ideas, talk to other SEND Parents/carers or just see a different face then please get in touch and we will email you the link to join in. You are welcome to join in on any one, or all of them if you prefer, just simply email the coordinator responsible for that date and they will send you the zoom login details.

All our events listed below are free to FVS members unless otherwise stated. Plus our membership is free to join.

6th October (Wednesday 10.00am) 'General Chat'

7th October (Thursday 10.30am) 'Autism Strategy Update'

Join us to hear an update on Surrey’s Autism Strategy and learn how services are to be improved. The speakers will be: Tom Moore, County Autism Lead at Surrey County Council; Christina Earl, Head of Innovation and Business Development, Surrey Choices; and Susan Harris, Surrey’s Principal Education Psychologist and Autism Strategy Lead. This will be an ideal opportunity for FVS members to ask questions and provide feedback.

The FVS hosts for the event are Sara and Emily, Waverley and Runnymede Co-ordinators and they will be joined by Leanne Henderson, Participation Manager.

8th October (Friday 11.00am) 'Are you a parent with a child 0 – 4 with additional needs?'

Family Voice, Surrey’s Parent Carer Forum will be holding free monthly Zoom events for parent carers who have children aged between 0 – 4. The group is for families who have a child with any disability or additional needs either diagnosed or undiagnosed.

Join Leanne, Emily and Jenni for a Zoom coffee and informal chat, to share your experiences and ask any questions.

8th October (Friday 2.00pm) 'FB live - Benedicte chats to All Aboard Club'

This event has been postponed - we will advise you of a new date ASAP 12th October (Tuesday 10.30am) 'Meet Emily Chalk, Caseworker at Duncan Lewis Solicitors'

As a Caseworker for the child care department at Duncan Lewis Solicitors. Emily assists on a variety of cases representing both parents and guardians.

Emily has a particular interest in the overlap between the childcare legal process and SEND law, offering pro-bono advice to clients and assisting colleagues through cases with SEND elements. Emily is also an IPSEA Adviser, providing special educational needs and disability rights advice through the Tribunal helpline. Providing Tribunal support service to assist through the SEND Tribunal process.

Join us to listen Emily discuss a range of legal issues, including EHCPs, school placements and Tribunals.

13th October (Wednesday 11.00am) 'School Anxiety Chat'

Do you have a child or young person who struggles with attending school or college? If so you may like to join our friendly support group.

There is a WhatsApp group for day-to-day chat and we also have regular Zoom catch-ups - currently on the second Wednesday of each month at 11am.

14th October(Thursday 11.00am) 'Downs Syndrome Drop in for parents chat'

Would love to join us for a coffee and chat where we share our experiences and ideas. We meet once a month and its always extremely beneficial.

14th October (Thursday 6.00pm) 'Monthly PDA group chat'

Please come along to our monthly group for parent carers of children and YP with PDA – with or without a diagnosis. All welcome.

18th October (Monday 6.30pm) '16+ Group'

Our 16+ group is for parent carers of young people age 16-25 with additional needs. The group meets monthly via Zoom on a Monday evening from 6.30pm – 8.00pm, to share experiences, exchange tips and advice, and to hear from expert speakers. There’s also a private WhatsApp group for day-to-day chat. The FVS co-hosts for the group are Gretta Schifano & Lucy Young. This session will be a general chat session, with no expert speaker.

19th October (Tuesday 11.30am) 'Neurographica: draw yourself happy!'

What is this event about?

Understand the benefits of Neurographica on emotional and mental health and enjoy a mini session to de-stress and instantly relax.

Pen and paper are sufficient to take part, but if you can get hold of a fine felt pen (for example a Sharpie) that would be even better.

What is Neurographica?

Neurographica is a new modern method of self-discovery and management of life situations through fun and simple drawing. It was invented by Russian psychologist Pavel Piskarev in 2013 and is now rapidly becoming popular around the world.

Thanks to the use of simple step-by-step models, Neurographica can help improve emotional response to life challenges and can provide instant stress relief. Who is Anna?

Anna is a local mum who lives in Runnymede. One of her children has Special Needs.

What are her credentials?

Anna is an artist, a Neurographica Instructor, a Transformational Art Coach, and an Instructors Course teacher at the Psychology of Creativity Institute in Moscow.

In her private practice and in her School of Neurographica, she runs both group and individual Neurographica and NeuroArt classes for adults and children alike.

SEND Advice Surrey provide impartial, confidential and free advice and support on SEND education issues to parents. They're joining us via Zoom on Friday 22nd October from 10.30am to 12.30pm to talk about their service and to answer questions on SEND education issues.

The session will be co-hosted by FVS Coordinators Jenni Williams and Emily Hazell

This is a group for those who's children suffer with Restrictive food intake for whatever reason, AFRID, ASD, allergies, poor swallow etc.

Mindworks Surrey is the new name for Surrey’s emotional wellbeing and mental health service for children, young people and families. It offers an extensive range of advice, support and treatment provided by an alliance of NHS and voluntary sector providers. Children and young people have more choice about their options, more opportunity to access a range of services in many different ways and in different settings, and a central voice in decisions about their care. A key focus is on getting help early and building resilience. Families can request support themselves or through their school. 13th November (Saturday 10.30am) 'Author Ant Miles talks about his experiences with dyslexia'

Waverley resident Ant Miles has severe dyslexia and this year published his first book - From The Forest They Came and other short stories – uplifting folk and fairytales enjoyed by all ages. Invite your children and teens to join you online to hear how Ant is inspired by nature, the wild and all things magical: “Dyslexia is a gift, it’s where the imagination comes from”.

19th November (Friday 10.00am) 'FB live Mindjam: education and counselling through gaming'

Dan from Mindjam will talk about how and why he created Mindjam.

They work online with young people through the medium of video games. Mentors provide a combination of learning and counselling based on the individual’s need.

23rd November (Tuesday 1.00pm) 'Enhancing your well-being - for carers '

Nicola Reekie is a parent carer, Founder of The PDA Space and is a professional coach – she is passionate about spreading PDA awareness and helping families create a calmer more compassionate home to live in.

She provides many workshops and runs therapeutic groups as well as an annual PDA summit.

6th December (Monday 7.30pm) 'Dads Chat'

Calling all Dads and male carers, we are holding an online event just for you with guest speaker Dr Mark Brown of Special Help for Special Needs. Mark will be sharing invaluable advice, and you will be able to share experiences and meet other Dads and male parent carers.

About Mark:

Mark has over 30 years’ experience working with people with neurodiverse issues and has been working with children with additional needs since 2000.

Mark will be happy to answer any questions you have with regards to your child’s ADHD/autistic world. Whatever the question from puberty, online life, behaviour or school issues, Mark will be able to advise you and offer practical strategies with which to navigate your child’s world and help them thrive. If you have any specific areas you wish to cover, please advise your questions beforehand via the email below.
